Paper Abstract
In recent years, the design of mosques in Bangladesh has experienced a significant shift. Architects are now focusing more on the essence of Islamic values rather than relying on symbolic identities. Designers are maintaining the functional requirements of a mosque and prioritizing spatial quality. In Islamic ideology, a mosque is considered a social space, not just a place for prayer. Communal ownership is regarded as a crucial element in this context. Historically, certain structural features have been characteristic of mosques since the beginning of Islam. These include arches, tall minarets, domes, multiple domes, prominent minbars and open courtyards. However, these elements were traditionally used to symbolize the mosque as an Islamic prayer space. Over time, minarets have gradually become less important, and domes have become less noticeable. Mosque design in Bangladesh has become more contextual, adapting to the local environment and community needs. Mosques are now more adaptable, allowing for different social activities. This paper will review the design of a mosque in Bangladesh, critically examining the symbolic representation of Islamic architecture. The mosque will be analysed regarding its design approach, formal expression and visual impact.
