Paper Abstract

ABSTRACT The primary aim of this study is to evaluate how mosques can be utilized in the aftermath of devastating disasters in Turkey. Disasters are extraordinary situations where communities are significantly affected, and the rapid provision of shelter and basic needs becomes essential. Mosques, with their large spaces, facilities that can serve many people, accessible locations, and status as public spaces, can be an ideal option to meet various needs after a disaster. In this context, the study focuses on analyzing the strategic advantages of mosques after disasters and how they can be effectively utilized during such processes. The potential areas of use for mosques in post-disaster crisis management are quite diverse. Their large indoor spaces and surrounding open areas make them suitable for temporary shelter, logistical support, and gathering areas. Additionally, the wet spaces in mosques, such as kitchens, restrooms, and ablution areas, provide a significant advantage for meeting hygiene needs. With these features, mosques stand out as structures capable of offering multi-functional services in post-disaster situations. The study is centered on how these potentials can be used more efficiently. In this study, the spatial potentials of mosques in disaster situations and crisis management have been comprehensively evaluated. Additionally, a literature review has been conducted. The literature review examined academic studies related to mosques previously used as temporary shelters, logistical support centers, and gathering places in disaster situations, both in Turkey and globally. The data obtained has formed a foundational dataset to analyze the potential use of mosques in disaster management and crisis situations. It should be noted that mosques are not only places of worship but also hold strategic importance for social solidarity and crisis management. Based on the results of the literature review, previous examples of using mosques for shelter in disaster situations have been examined, and the integration of these structures into crisis management strategies has been recommended. In this context, scenarios and key success criteria have been developed to ensure that mosques in Turkey can effectively meet needs in the aftermath of disasters. Keywords: Emergencies, Natural Disasters, Earthquake, Post-Disaster Shelter, Mosque, Turkey.
