Once upon a time, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, was entitled as the city of mosques. Bangladesh epitomizes the rich heritage of mosque architecture in the region. This paper investigates the architectural metamorphosis of mosques in Bangladesh, tracing their evolution from antiquity through modernity to novelty. The journey begins in 1204 with the advent of Muslim rule in Bengal, introducing mosque designs inspired by Turko-Iranian styles, including Seljuk influences and square modules with domes (gombujes). Over time, a distinct Bengali style emerged, characterized by the use of local materials such as terracotta bricks (poramati) and the development of unique architectural motifs. Early mosques in Bengal often lacked minarets, reflecting the design of the Prophet Muhammad’s (S) Mosque in Medina. Some realms introduced minarets as symbols of power and for the call to prayer (azan). Decorative elements evolved from Iranian floral patterns to indigenous Bengali motifs, incorporating trees, herbs, and flowers. Contemporary mosque architecture in Bangladesh has embraced modernity, often excluding traditional domes and arches in favor of geometric forms and new materials. This paper questions the future direction of mosque architecture in Bangladesh, pondering whether to revive the detailed plans, motifs, and stylistic elements used in the construction and decoration of historical mosques in novel ways or to entirely reinvent the style. Through extensive literature review, field surveys of heritage mosques, and analysis of contemporary designs, this research aims to identify the true essence of Bangladeshi mosque architecture. The findings suggest a need to revive the authentic architectural style of Bangladeshi mosques, blending Islamic requirements with the historical and cultural essence of the region. This approach should integrate the best elements of modern and contemporary architecture while preserving traditional features such as rich motifs, architectural designs, courtyards, and natural elements like ponds for ablution. The goal is to create a bold architectural statement that represents the unique identity of Bangladeshi mosque architecture, harmonizing past and present influences. This research underscores the importance of a design philosophy that respects historical continuity while embracing contemporary innovations, ensuring that the architectural heritage of Bangladeshi mosques remains vibrant and relevant in the modern era.
