Paper Abstract
Mosque architecture has always been rich with symbolic meanings, deeply rooted in Islamic principles and cultural traditions. In contemporary contexts, these symbols are being reinterpreted and redesigned to align with modern architectural trends and the evolving needs of Muslim communities worldwide. This paper explores the semiotics of mosque architecture, focusing on how traditional symbols such as domes, minarets, and mihrabs are being adapted in modern mosque designs. By analyzing a selection of contemporary mosques from different cultural backgrounds, this study aims to decode the symbolic language used in their architecture, assessing how these symbols convey religious and cultural meanings to the worshippers and the broader community. The research investigates the extent to which these modern interpretations maintain continuity with traditional mosque symbolism, and how they innovate to address contemporary social, environmental, and aesthetic concerns. Through this analysis, the paper sheds light on the role of semiotics in shaping the spiritual and communal experience of mosque spaces in the 21st century.
