Paper Abstract
Abstract:
This paper aims to explore the theoretical frameworks underpinning architectural creativity in mosque design, focusing on key theories such as canonical, pragmatical, historical, iconical, and metaphorical design. Mosques, as pivotal structures within Islamic culture, serve not only religious purposes but also act as social, cultural, and political symbols. This study examines how these theories manifest in mosque architecture, analyzing their influence on design practices and the resulting architectural expressions.
The research begins by defining each theoretical approach. Canonical design emphasizes adherence to traditional forms and religious guidelines, ensuring that mosques maintain their spiritual and cultural essence. Pragmatical design focuses on functional and contextual considerations, adapting mosque architecture to meet contemporary needs and environmental challenges. Historical design involves the reinterpretation of historical architectural elements, creating a dialogue between past and present.
Iconical design highlights the symbolic and visual impact of mosques, often employing distinctive architectural features to convey religious and cultural identity. Metaphorical design, on the other hand, uses architectural elements to represent abstract concepts or narratives, enriching the spiritual experience through symbolic representation.
Through a series of case studies, this paper illustrates how these theories are applied in practice, showcasing examples of mosques that embody these diverse design philosophies. The study also considers the role of technological advancements and sustainable practices in contemporary mosque design, reflecting a shift towards more innovative and environmentally conscious approaches.
In conclusion, this paper provides insights into the complex interplay between tradition and innovation in mosque architecture. By examining the theoretical foundations of mosque design, it highlights the importance of architectural creativity in shaping the spiritual and cultural landscapes of Muslim communities worldwide. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how architectural theories can inform and inspire future mosque design, offering a framework for architects and scholars alike.
