Paper Abstract
Dhaka is considered as the “City of Mosques” due to its rich history and the abundance of historical mosques scattered throughout the city. Being one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Dhaka faces significant social, economic, and infrastructural challenges. In this context, mosques can play a crucial role in addressing community needs. This research investigates how mosques in Dhaka are currently utilized and identifies opportunities for them to serve as community hub.
Although the primary role of mosque has always been as place of worship, historically there are instances for these mosques being used as community hubs. This study aims to evaluate the transformation of mosques from mere prayer spaces into center of community activities and analyze their broader urban impact. When mosques incorporate community services, they significantly enhance social cohesion, provide critical resources to underserved populations and contribute to the overall well-being of the urban environment. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including surveys and case studies, this study examines the current functions of selected mosques in Dhaka. It evaluates the extent to which these mosques provide services beyond religious practices and their impact on the surrounding community. This study will provide insights into best practices for mosque design and use in urban environment that integrates religious, social, and urban development goals. Moreover, it advocates for rethinking the role of mosques in a densely populated city like Dhaka. It encourages the evolution of mosques into vibrant community hubs that address the diverse needs of their neighborhoods.
