THE SYMBOLIC MEANING OF DOME IN SELJUK AND OTTOMAN MOSQUES IN ANATOLIA This paper focuses on the Seljuk and Ottoman mosques in Anatolia built between 13th and 16th centuries and their domes through a symbolic investigation. It aims to explore the symbolic meaning of the dome through its role as a representative of divine presence and order according to the Islamic thought and cosmology. The dome, a prominent element used in many structures throughout centuries, has symbolized the great relationship between the macrocosm and the microcosm, serving as a link between the divine presence and the earthly realm through its form and architectural qualities in many cultures. In mosque architecture of Anatolia that emerged in the Seljukian Era and flourished in the Ottoman Era, the dome also preserved its significance both as an architectural element and as a profound symbol of the heaven and the divinity and unity of God, embodying the Islamic beliefs. Thus, such mosques that dominated the Anatolian built environment become exceptional examples to analyze the symbolic meaning of the dome in relation to the religious landscape. Within this context, as a key architectural element that changed the spiritual atmosphere of mosque architecture in Anatolia, the dome carried a greater meaning in symbolic significance, representing heavens, the unity of God, and the bridge between such divinity and the humans through its formal and architectural qualities. Therefore, this study delves into symbolic meaning of the dome in Seljuk and Ottoman mosques in Anatolia, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, with a religious, cosmic, and architectural focus to investigate how the domes reflected Islamic beliefs about divine presence, cosmic order, and the relationship between the heavens and the earthly realm through a formal and architectural analysis. By utilizing religious texts and previous scholarly research on mosque architecture and broader cosmic meanings, it aims to illuminate the enduring significance of the dome in Seljuk and Ottoman mosques in Anatolia, demonstrating how it served as a powerful symbol of divine presence and cosmic connection, shaping the architecture and spiritual atmosphere through its religious, cosmic, and symbolic meanings.
