Paper Abstract
Energy consumption is viewed as one of the vital aspects that affect building performance. The
importance of energy efficient buildings is highly amplified in hot climate countries. In Saudi Arabia,
despite the great interest in raising the energy efficiency of mosques and establishing energy as one of the
main points on which the Saudi Vision 2030 is based, there is still a lack of expertise in designing and
building efficient mosques. A literature review reveals that there is lack of models which can look at
evaluating environmental emissions and energy consumption of mosques. In this context, this research
introduces a comprehensive model which is able of assessing six different types of environmental
emissions and energy consumption along the different life cycle phases of the mosque. The developed
model tackles greenhouse gases, eutrophication particles, ozone-depleting particles, sulfur dioxide,
particular matter and smog. Furthermore, the developed studies the implications of different building
materials on environmental emissions and energy consumption. Results demonstrated that the operation and
manufacturing phases have the highest weight among the investigated life cycle phases. It is expected that
the developed model will provide an efficient platform that aids asset managers in implementing energy-efficient and low-carbon measures and policies.
