Paper Abstract

Rome Mosque: Harmony with Nature, Culture and Italian and Islamic Architecture Dr. Eng. Sherine Khalil, Ph.D. Environmental Engineering, Architecture and Sustainable Development. Formerly, The American University in Cairo- Ministry of Environment, Egypt. Tel: 002 01227532752. Email: Sherrykhalil@yahoo.com Abstract The Research Issue is comprised of multi-factorial challenges, summarized as: 1) Italian acceptance of an Islamic center and Mosque in Rome; 2) Socio-cultural acceptance by Italians; 3) Restrictions imposed by Rome regarding preserving Rome Skyline, site selection criteria, and Minaret height; 4) Financial challenge overcome through the generosity of Saudi Arabia; 5) Architectural challenges of having a mosque with Islamic Architectural Traditions yet harmonious with Italian Architecture; 6) Selection and merger of architectural design from many architectural firms; 7) Natural Environment of allocated land at a valley of a mountain forest on the Suburbs of Rome. The Objective of the research is to discover how all these challenges were resolved. This has been achieved through review, research, analysis, synthesis and extensive annual site visits to Rome Mosque, interviews and observations. The research reviews: Introduction, Contextual information, Project Formulation, Conception, Execution and Actual Mosque Operation, and discusses the different architectural elements of the Mosque of Rome that make it a pioneering practical experience and innovative solution of a Mosque in an Urban context especially in Rome as well as integrating harmony with the surrounding natural environment and socio-cultural environment and a blend of Italian and Islamic Architecture. The exterior looks typically Italian with the use of Italian colors, the lead covered dome with its surrounding smaller domes are reminiscent of Turkish Style, while the interior is reminiscent of Mosques from Morocco and Turkey with the beautiful bright mosaics. Internally there is an interplay of lights through the stepped domes’ windows. The author views that the tall columns that branch at the top (a repeated element and integral in this Mosque) are shaped like the tall Italian Stone Pine Trees, a typical and symbolic tree of Rome. The research concludes with how the Mosque of Rome has succeeded to blend harmoniously with the natural environment and the socio-cultural environment and the Italian and Islamic Architecture. It demonstrates that it is a pioneering practical experience and innovative solution of a Mosque in an Urban context especially in Rome.
