Paper Abstract

The Research Issue is comprised of multi-factorial challenges that can be summarized as follows: 1) Italian acceptance of an Islamic center and Mosque in Rome; 2) Socio-cultural acceptance by Italians; 3) Restrictions imposed by Rome and regarding preserving Rome Skyline and hence site selection based on many criteria, and including limiting the height of the Minaret; 4) Financial challenge that was overcome thanks to the generosity of H.M. King Faisal of Saudi Arabia; 5) Architectural challenges of having a mosque with Islamic Architectural Traditions yet harmonious with Italian Architecture; 6) Selection of architectural design from more than 30 architectural firms and concluding with a merger of some of these firms; 7) Natural Environment of the allocated land which was selected at the bottom of a valley of a mountain forest on the Suburbs of Rome. The Objective of the research is to discover how all these challenges were resolved. This has been achieved through review, research, analysis, synthesis and extensive annual site visits, interviews and observations. The research discusses the different architectural elements of the Mosque of Rome that make it a pioneering practical experience and innovative solution of a Mosque in an Urban context especially in Rome as well as integrating harmony with the surrounding natural environment and socio-cultural environment and a blend of Italian and Islamic Architecture. The exterior look typically Italian with the use of Italian colors and building techniques, the lead covered dome with its surrounding smaller domes are reminiscent of Turkish Style, while the interior is reminiscent of Mosques from Morocco and Turkey with the beautiful bright mosaics. Internally there is an interplay of lights through the stepped domes windows. The author views that the tall columns that branch at the top (a repeated element and integral in this Mosque) are shaped like the tall Italian Stone Pine Trees, a typical and symbolic tree of Rome. The research concludes with how the Mosque of Rome (Introduction, Contextual information, project formulation and conception, execution and actual Mosque operation) has succeeded to blend harmoniously with the natural environment surroundings, the socio-cultural environment and the Architecture is an integration of Italian Architecture and Islamic Architecture.
