Paper Abstract
“A Mosque” – is a center of Islamic spirit and activity. From a very early age, over and above its essentially religious importance, a mosque also serves as a place for social interaction.
The role of Mosques is often misunderstood by societies across the globe. It is not a place just for prayer; it should be a place where the heart is connected, where people meet with their brothers and sisters, get acknowledged about their own community, help and solve their problems, increase and share their knowledge of truthfulness and in a whole helps to uplift a community condition. So, a mosque complex needs to be a composite center, having activities in and around the mosque building, fulfilling the needs of people, increasing community participation, and thus magnetizing people with the house of Allah.
Since early Islamic history, much attention has been paid to mosque architecture. It has developed over history and faced several changes. Changes can be seen in the variations of the mosques’ plans, functions, elements, and styles. With the increasing demand to spread the proper knowledge of Islam, we need our mosques to be a place for prayer and a place for seeking and spreading Islamic knowledge, as in the historic period. But, the importance of the ambiance and the surrounding facilities are often neglected. So, the visual and functional characteristics of mosque architecture should now deal with its historical, cultural, traditional, and visual vocabulary with the new environment and context to increase the opportunity to engage community people.
The aim of the paper is to know the historical functional role of mosques and their changes throughout the time being through literature reviews and identify the present situations through case studies. Thus, the outcome of this paper will be the guideline for making appropriate programs towards a mosque complex design, which will introduce the idea of changing the uses and meaning of a mosque complex in the present religious and social life.
