Paper Abstract

Mosques as DURBAR: Anatomical Analysis of Internal Spatial Qualities in Bengali Sultanate Mosques Abstract During the Sultanate period in medieval Bengal, mosques evolved beyond their conventional function as places of worship, emerging as pivotal administrative centers and public assembly venues. Within these prayer halls, the Khalifas oversaw regional governance and provincial assemblies, thereby establishing mosques as essential communication knobs for both society and the Bengal province. This research endeavors to clarify the rationale behind the utilization of mosques as public audience spaces (Durbars), analyzing their operational roles and justifying their physical attributes in terms of proportion, scale, spirituality, and population dynamics. Furthermore, the study delves into the progression of geometric principles that resulted in optical corrections aligned with human scale. Lastly, it provides a comparative analysis of the internal spatial qualities of Durbars through illustrative methodologies. Keywords: medieval mosque, spirituality, audience hall, internal space, form and geometry
