Paper Abstract
The evolution of mosque architecture over the centuries showcases how design elements have transformed, influenced by various cultural, regional, and historical factors. From the early hypostyle mosques of the Umayyad and Abbasid periods to the ornate four-iwan structures of Persian mosques and the grand domes of Ottoman architecture, each era has added its unique features and innovations. This continuous adaptation and reinterpretation of traditional elements have met the changing needs and aesthetics of Islamic communities.
This study delves into the architecture of the Bahria Mosque in Lahore, focusing on how open spaces and landscape design preserve and enhance the historical essence of mosque architecture. The goal is to analyze the architectural elements of the Bahria Mosque and how traditional mosque styles have been adapted to include modern landscape and open space designs. This includes examining courtyards, green spaces, and water features, and understanding their impact on both functionality and aesthetics.
Using a qualitative approach, the study involves architectural analysis and comparative studies, with detailed examination of the Bahria Mosque's design plans, on-site observations, and reviews of historical and contemporary architectural literature. The research also includes interviews with architects and historians to gain insights into design intentions and historical influences.
The findings reveal that the Bahria Mosque successfully blends traditional and modern architectural elements, creating a harmonious design that respects historical precedents while meeting contemporary needs. The extensive use of open spaces, landscaped courtyards, and water features not only enhances the mosque's aesthetic appeal but also improves its functionality, providing a serene and conducive environment for worship. This study suggests that integrating traditional design elements with modern innovations can significantly enrich the architectural and cultural value of contemporary religious structures.
