I am an expert in the rehabilitation of cultural heritage and an expert member of ICOMOS-CIAV. I am an associate member of CIVVIH and have been recognized with several awards and honors for my academic leadership and accomplishments.
I was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young People (TOYP) in the world in the academic leadership and accomplishment category. Additionally, I received the Arab Archaeologists Union Award for Scientific Excellence for Archaeological Youth in Cairo. I was appointed by the Aga Khan Trust as the consultant architect for the rehabilitation Pilot Project of Souk al-Saqqatiya in Aleppo Old City.
I have continued to work in the rehabilitation field, using my personal architectural experience and knowledge of archaeology to study domed houses in Northern Syria. I am also working to empower rural women to preserve rural styles, traditional architecture, and crafts historically associated with the landscape of the region.
My passion for Syrian cultural heritage and my sympathy for the devastation during the crisis have motivated me to contribute to its protection and safeguarding through rehabilitation projects. I have participated in several scientific conferences and workshops at local and regional conferences in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Bahrain, Lebanon, France, Spain, India, Australia, Poland, and Estonia.</div>

<div class="pafe-acf-repeater-sub-field">Strategies for Rehabilitating Mosques in Aleppo Old City
after Crises (War - Earthquake)
Syria has endured consecutive crises since the onset of conflict in 2011, followed by the devastation caused by the Maraş earthquake on February 6, 2023. These crises have significantly and adversely impacted Syria's cultural heritage, particularly in the Old City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.
The destruction and damage have impacted numerous internationally significant heritage buildings spanning various historical periods (Umayyad, Zengid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman). Islamic religious structures such as mosques, zawiyas, hospices, and historical religious madrasas have not been exempt from this destruction and damage.
Following the cessation of conflict in Aleppo, the rehabilitation process commenced for several religious buildings due to their significance and relevance to Aleppo and Syrian society overall. Notably, iconic structures such as the Umayyad Great Mosque have been prioritized for restoration.
This research paper will delve into strategies for rehabilitating mosques in Aleppo after crises (war- earthquake) and will seek to address specific questions, including:
- Was a specific strategy employed in the rehabilitation process throughout the old city of Aleppo?
- What factors, determinants, and obstacles influenced the recovery process?
- The role of endowment, self-financing, and the local community in the rehabilitation and recovery pro and as securing necessary financial resources.
- The impact of economic blockade and international sanctions on impeding recovery.
- The influence of official and private foreign aid in expediting the rehabilitation process.
To address these inquiries, case studies of rehabilitation processes will be examined, with particular emphasis on the restoration project of the Umayyad Mosque and its historic minaret in the heart of ancient Aleppo. The significance of the mosque as a representation of Aleppo's Islamic identity, and the symbolism of its restoration as a beacon of hope affirming Syria's resilience after years of conflict, will be duly considered.
