Paper Abstract

This study investigates the colonial discourses of mosque aesthetics within mid-nineteenth-century world exhibitions, where economic and industrial achievements were prominently celebrated across Europe and North America. These exhibitions served as platforms for showcasing the colonial capitalist order, presenting industrial products, cultural artifacts, and architectural models shaped by imperial power, and framing non-Western cultures through a lens of imperial dominance. Within this context, the mosque and its aesthetic language became central to representing Muslim nations—either through the construction of functional mosques or the use of mosque aesthetic language in other structures. The primary aim of this research is to reveal how mosque aesthetics were constructed and represented by both Muslims and Western powers at these exhibitions, that will help reveal the complexities of mosque architecture in the West. The study argues that similar challenges persist today in the construction of mosques in Western contexts, where tensions between modernity and tradition continue to shape representational narratives. Using 'Turkish' and 'Moroccan' mosque representations as contrasting yet complementary case studies, this research analyzes archival materials, including official reports, architectural critiques, and visitor accounts in the world exhibitions between mid-nineteenth century until the beginning of twentieth century. By examining these records, the study will explore the narratives surrounding mosque aesthetics, particularly how these reflect broader socio-political ideologies. This research aims to contribute a nuanced historical perspective on the colonial influence in mosque architecture, offering insights into the ongoing discourse surrounding modernity, tradition, and representation.
