Personal Biography
Shaista Perveen is a research scholar at the Department of Architecture, School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, specializing in architectural conservation with a focus on Islamic Architecture. With over a decade of experience in heritage conservation and restoration, she has her own practice and has worked on numerous projects, including those with INTACH Delhi and Megawra al Kahlifa in Cairo. Shaista has been an educator at the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, where she has taught at undergraduate (B. Arch) and postgraduate (M. Arch) levels. Her academic contributions extend to various conferences and seminars on Islamic Architecture, reflecting her deep commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Her deep interest in cultural heritage fuels her passion for reading, travelling, and exploring diverse cuisines across India and abroad.
Paper Abstract
Historically, mosque precincts have served as integrated urban entities, functioning as religious, cultural, social, and political institutions. In the 21st century, mosques have evolved significantly, and their revival as a building type has introduced versatile changes in their architecture and design. Unlike other religious structures, mosques do not function as static building types; their usage patterns are inherently dynamic.
This paper aims to examine the spatio-temporal dynamics of mosque usage within their precincts, with a focus on how these spaces are utilized and transformed over time, considering daily, weekly, and seasonal patterns. The study is conducted through mapping the temporal flow of people and activities, overlaying the mosque and its surrounding precincts in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The contemporary mosques selected for this spatio-temporal analysis are Bait ur Rauf Mosque, Gulshan Society Mosque, and the Red Mosque—each recognized for their versatile architectural design. A spatio-temporal analysis of their post-occupancy usage is essential to solidify their position within the contemporary urban context.
The mosques are observed and mapped during peak and non-peak times, including Ramadan, Eid, Fridays, and regular days, at all five prayer times, to provide a detailed spatio-temporal analysis. This approach helps to reveal the dynamic nature of the mosque and its precincts, showing how they interact with the broader urban environment over time.
The study provides a comprehensive mapping of how mosques function as dynamic organisms, expanding and contracting their usage within a neighbourhood, serving as a nucleus of activity. The mosque precincts act as permeable entities, absorbing the pressures of the surrounding community. This analysis offers insights into the temporal rhythms of mosque activities, such as prayer times and special events, and their impact on the adjacent precinct. The findings emphasize the design of the mosque and its precincts as an urban entity, extending beyond their physical boundaries.
