Paper Abstract
Mosques, traditionally seen as places of worship and social gathering, possess a unique potential to influence the revitalization of urban spaces. By integrating religious, cultural, and communal functions, mosques can act as catalysts for urban renewal and development, enhancing connectivity, inclusivity, and vibrancy in their surroundings. This study examines the transformative role of mosque architecture in urban revitalization, focusing on the Hasan II Mosque in Casablanca—a prime example of how a religious structure can contribute to the social, cultural, and economic renewal of its city. The Hasan II Mosque is one of the world's largest mosques and has become a defining landmark of Casablanca. Its innovative design and monumental scale have made it a focal point of the city's urban fabric. By blending traditional Islamic architecture with modern construction techniques, the mosque not only serves the spiritual needs of the community but also revitalizes the surrounding area. Its location on the Atlantic coast and its towering minaret—visible from across the city—have turned the mosque into a symbol of Casablanca, drawing both Muslim and non-Muslim visitors from around the world. This inflow of tourism has revitalized the local economy, supporting businesses and encouraging further urban development. Moreover, the mosque's integration with public spaces and infrastructure has created a more cohesive and accessible urban environment. The research explores how the mosque's design, through the thoughtful use of space, and attention to cultural context, has contributed to the regeneration of its urban setting. Through this case study of the Hasan II Mosque, this research highlights the broader implications of mosque architecture in contemporary urban planning. The findings underscore the potential of religious architecture to shape and enhance urban life, offering valuable insights for future urban development projects.
