Paper Abstract
The Joglo Pencu traditional house from Kudus, Indonesia, serves as both residential and communal spaces, embodying the values and aesthetics of Javanese culture. Known since the 1500s, these structures have been traditionally used by the elite in the residential areas surrounding the Sunan Kudus tomb complex. The knockdown system of the Joglo Pencu house allows it to be relocated to different settings, adapting to new contexts. The structural strength and durability of teak wood, which can last for hundreds of years, enable these buildings to be repurposed in modern times to meet different needs. This study examines the transformation of a traditional Joglo Pencu house in Kudus City, Indonesia, into the Al-Musafirin Mosque located in Tangerang City, Indonesia. This transformation involves adapting the distinctive elements of the Joglo Pencu to meet the requirements of a mosque, such as creating prayer spaces, ensuring correct orientation towards Mecca, and accommodating communal worship practices. This transformation is not merely a functional adaptation but also an effort to preserve cultural and spiritual heritage by retaining key architectural features, such as the iconic Joglo roof, intricate wood carvings, and structural columns. The integration of these elements into the mosque’s design reflects respect for Javanese heritage while fulfilling contemporary religious needs. The research employs an exploratory qualitative method to understand the phenomenon within the context of the Joglo Pencu house undergoing functional and locational transformation. Data processing considers the social, cultural, and environmental backgrounds influencing the phenomenon being studied. Therefore, methods such as in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, observations, document studies, and field notes are crucial for data collection. This study highlights the functional adaptation process at the Al-Musafirin Mosque, allowing the preservation of traditional Joglo structures within a new religious context, ensuring that the building remains relevant and functional in its urban setting. The findings suggest that the use of knockdown systems in preserving traditional buildings through relocation and functional adaptation can effectively extend the lifespan and enhance the cultural value of historic structures.
