Paper Abstract

Urban villages are a form of settlement located in urban areas with distinct Indonesian characteristics. The inhabitants of urban villages retain rural lifestyles and close familial bonds. The density of buildings and population is generally high. The placement of land and the organization of buildings in urban villages are typically not well-planned, as they are built by the community itself. However, with urban development initiatives by the government, some urban villages are being better organized, driven by community awareness and governmental guidance. The need for mosques in residential areas has become significant. This need is accompanied by a desire to build mosques in accordance with religious teachings, prompting some individuals with the means to take the initiative to start constructing mosques. Due to poor planning, the distribution of mosques in urban villages is uneven, with some being very close to each other while others are quite far apart. As community-built mosques, their existence presents an interesting subject for study. The land used is usually waqf land donated by village leaders. Typically, due to limited funds, the construction is carried out through community self-help. The research question is how these mosques can be built without the assistance of architects. Based on this background, the research aims to uncover the role of local craftsmanship in the creation of physical mosque buildings. Some mosques even have architectural features that possess considerable aesthetic value. The research is conducted in the urban village of Lebak Gede, Bandung, Indonesia. This area, located behind a campus, has many mosques. Given that this study involves a deep understanding of social processes and community construction techniques, interviews with mosque leaders, community members, and builders, as well as direct field observations, are carried out. The focus is on understanding the sources of design ideas, construction processes, and the overall mosque-building activities. Qualitative data analysis will provide insights into the role of local craftsmanship and the dynamics of construction. Combining direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary analysis will offer a comprehensive picture of mosque construction by the community without architectural support. The results of the research will contribute to the knowledge of community-based design. Keywords: Urban Village Mosques, Craftsmanship, Community Role, Community-Based Development
