Spatial Analysis of 14th Century Mosques in Mamluk, Ilkhanid, Ottoman and Timurid Perspectives The 14th century, the last century of the Middle Ages, was a period of competition between regional powers in Islamic geography. The Ottoman-Timurid rivalry at the end of the century replaced the Mamluk-Ilkhanid rivalry at the beginning. In this environment of competition, the rulers also competed in architecture. We could read the architectural competition best through mosques. This study focuses on the mosques built by four important powers of the century. The Mamluk, Ilkhanid, Ottoman and Timurid mosques are analysed first. The mosque structures of each dynasty were classified typologically regarding previous studies. A sample from each plan type was selected and the spatial organization of the mosques was analysed. The unique elements of the mosques of each region were identified, the use of the courtyard and the organizational structure around the courtyard were investigated. Then, their spatial configurations were analysed. At this point, space syntax analyses were made through the “Agraph” and “Depthmap X” programs. First, graph maps were obtained and then VGA (Visual Graph Analysis) maps were created. Based on the analysis data (total depth, mean depth, visual connectivity, visual integration, visual entropy, visual mean depth), the depth, permeability, intelligibility/legibility and centrality of the mosques built under the patronage of different dynasties in diverse regions were evaluated. In addition, it has been questioned whether the roles of units such as courtyard, prayer hall, maqsura, and iwan, which have an important place in spatial organization, in the spatial syntax vary according to the regions. In light of the data obtained, it has been determined that the mosque architecture of the four dynasties has its genotypes. Regional differences were interpreted through concepts such as privacy, permeability and legibility. On the other hand, differences were identified in the hierarchy of units that are part of the spatial organization. Key words: 14th century, Genotype, Mosque, Spatial configuration, Space syntax
