Abstract: In recent years, mosque architecture has witnessed a notable shift towards designs that reflect Western aesthetics, often sidelining traditional Islamic and vernacular elements. This paper examines the implications of this trend, exploring how modern architectural practices sometimes prioritise Western visual appeal over the inherent cultural and symbolic richness of Islamic heritage. Through a critical analysis of selected contemporary mosques, the study highlights the tensions between maintaining cultural authenticity and embracing global architectural trends. It emphasises the significance of preserving Islamic architectural traditions while advocating for a balanced approach that respects historical legacy alongside innovative design. Furthermore, the study investigates how native users perceive these new architectural styles, considering whether their needs and preferences are adequately addressed or disregarded. Ultimately, this research seeks to deepen our understanding of how mosque architecture can evolve to honor its roots while engaging a diverse, global audience.
