Examination of historical mosques in İstanbul in terms of biophilic design criteria

Personal Biography

I was born in İstanbul in 1991. Graduated from Yıldız Technical University ,Department of Architecture in 2014. Completed my master's degree in History of Architecture Programme at the same school in 2017. Afterwards, I completed my doctorate in the Building Physics Program at Yıldız Technical University in January 2024. Currently working at Fenerbahce University Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Programme as Assist Prof. since April 2024.

Paper Abstract

Biophilic design is the practice of creating architectural environments that take into account systems of nature. Numerous studies have demonstrated the beneficial impacts of exposure to natural habitats and components on human health and psychological well-being. Biophilic design criteria are examined under 3 headlines: experiencing nature directly, experiencing nature indirectly, and space and place experience. In addition; various parameters are defined under 14 subheadlines. These are can be classified as; visual connection to the natural landscape, non-visual connection with natural landscape, non-rhythmic sensory stimuli, heat and airflow variability, use of water element in space, use of dynamic and diffused light, relationship with natural systems, biomorphic forms and patterns, use of natural materials, complexity and order, prospect, refuge, mystery, risk/peril. Because of its ability to lower stress, increase creativity and cognitive function, enhance well-being, and accelerate healing, biophilic design is becoming more and more significant as the world's population continues to grow increasingly urbanized. Mosques are places where people go to worship and find serenity. Features such as increased concentration, improved memory, enhanced attention, and appropriate visual comfort conditions provided by biophilic design help to carry out the worship activities in mosques effectively. The biophilic qualities of historical or sacred buildings may be the explanation behind their profound influence on humans. In this regard; different Ottoman-era mosques located in the historical peninsula of Istanbul assessed based on the previously established criteria. Elements such as the preference for circular forms in architecture, benefiting from daylight and water, the use of natural materials such as wood and stone, and floral decorations are some characteristic features of the mosques of the period. Buildings classified according to the architectural style they belong to and the year of construction, and ranked according to the rate of providing biophilic design principals through tables and graphs. It is thought that; the results of the study can be used as a reference in determining the design criteria of new mosques. Keywords: Mosque, Biophilic Design, Nature, Historical, Design Parameters
