Historically, mosque architecture has evolved significantly, from its physical form to its spatial usage. Knowledge development among mosque designers (including architects) has increasingly been influenced by diverse knowledge sources, facilitated by the ease of information access today. Contemporary life has introduced new architectural movements, resulting in various conceptual designs that align with the context of the times. The early contemporary mosque movement in Indonesia began with Ahmad Noeman's design of the Salman Mosque in 1972. This design considered bold then, opened opportunities for mosque designers in Indonesia to present new design styles confidently. The need for mosques in various locations has become more pressing, especially for mosques along long-distance toll routes. Many contemporary mosques now feature attractive designs in rest areas. Previously, the need to worship during travel was met with makeshift prayer spaces, but today, the presence of beautiful mosques addresses this need. Travelers can both worship and rest at these mosques, which each have their own unique identity, contributing distinctiveness to the rest area. Travelers likely have preferred stop locations, which may be influenced by the presence of mosques, in addition to practical needs like refueling or eating. This study aims to understand travelers' preferences when choosing stop locations about the presence of mosques in rest areas. It seeks to determine what type of mosque they need and their choices. Accordingly, the study will be exploratory and qualitative, involving the distribution of open-ended questionnaires to travelers along toll roads on the island of Java. A minimum of 150 respondents will be needed, selected via online convenience sampling. The data analysis will include distribution analysis, cluster analysis, and coincidence analysis. Distribution analysis will identify which mosques are most preferred by travelers on the toll roads of Java, Indonesia. Cluster and coincidence analyses will explore the relationship between preferred stop locations and the presence of mosques in rest areas. Data will be categorized and formulated into groups based on user behavior, preferences, spatial theory, comfort, and aesthetic theory. The results of this research will be valuable for mosque designers, especially those working on rest area mosque design, ensuring that their designs meet the needs of travelers.
